How to Set Goals and Actually Accomplish Them

Goals are a must if you want to succeed in the many parts of life.

Everyone talks about this all the time, and it only prompts you to do it.

You get a sticky note, one of your note apps, or a nice whiteboard that you can use to put these goals.

Some of you look at these things and don’t even know where to start.

Some of you know exactly what to write, and you put it down in big gold letters.

You’re extremely motivated, and you go out there to face the world.

Days and months pass, and well, nothing much has changed.

You’re not doing better in life, you’re not any happier, and you’re far from being rich.

Heck, you’re probably a lot more stressed and probably in debt thanks to some failed attempts at a business.

That’s the sad reality of how goals work and one that happens to the best of us.

But why does this happen?

What can we do NOT to become another statistic?

There is actually a solution to this and one that I want to discuss with you today.

It’s called proper goal setting.

Not many know how it’s really done but everyone and their mothers know how to tell you to do it.

Most of them aren’t even successful, to begin with, and that is one thing that irritates the crap out of me.

Here is exactly what you need to know and do to win at this thing called life.

At least when it comes to setting goals.

Get Real

perfection-stagnation

This is the most important part of setting goals and one that will make the biggest impact on whether you fail or succeed.

Very much like how it all starts with the right mentality.

You get excited, you jot down everything, and you’re on your way to becoming a part of the 1% of successful few.

That’s where it starts, and that’s also where it ends.

Sometimes even as soon as the next day.

A lot of it has to do with not being realistic.

Not being realistic with the amount of work you plan on putting in.

Not being realistic with the type of money you plan to make.

And not realistic about where you want to be in life.

These goals usually look like this…

  • Work 8-19 hours a day
  • Make $10 million by the end of the month
  • Be my own boss by tomorrow

Of course, these are exaggerated but they are very much close to what a lot of you are trying to commit to.

With that being said, let me show you how you can take the most realistic approach to such categories.

Work Goals

This is going to be a huge contributor to the type of money you will make and the kind of life you plan to live.

If you can set a realistic approach to what you plan on doing to accomplish your goals, you can set yourself up for success.

You know you already live a busy life, and this is just with your J-O-B.

Factor in the kids, their wants and needs, and all the extracurricular activities you have going on.

That leaves you without about -24 hours that you can use to work on something like an affiliate marketing business.

However, you failed to factor in those things, and you decided to put “work 12 hours more a day on your business”.

You are going to get nowhere fast unless you actually see the real picture.

Obviously, you can see that time is not on your side but I will be showing you how to make it a little later in this post.

Money Goals

Everyone wants to be a millionaire.

Some of you skip that and put down things like “become a billionaire” instead.

I used to think that setting the bar high is the way to go, but I found out that it does not work that way in the real world.

Setting money goals is a huge part of the motivational aspect of accomplishing things, but it can also set you up for failure.

You need to start somewhere before you can make the big bucks and that is what you should focus on instead.

As a successful blogger, this couldn’t be any more true, and starting small is how it has to be done.

This reminds me of how I screamed at my computer when I discovered I made my first $1.

My other half thought I was nuts, but that simple accomplishment has done a lot for me.

From that $1, it went to $100, and from that $100, it has gone up to the kind of money that most goal setters can only dream of.

Set small and realistic money goals, and you will see BIG results.

Life Goals

Just like work and money, the ultimate goal of winning in life needs to be realistic.

Don’t tell yourself you are going to be working at home in 3 months if you know it is far fetched.

Don’t think you are going to be the boss if you don’t even have the time to put into building for your future.

It doesn’t work that way, and it will only hurt you if you are not being realistic.

There is this thing called setting goals, and there’s this thing called dreaming.

I’m sure you can tell the difference, so understand them before you start writing on your brand new whiteboard.

With these simple, realistic reminders, let me show you how you can accomplish and beat the odds.

Make a Sacrifice

socializing

This absolutely needs to be done if you want to accomplish your goals and ultimately succeed in life.

If you want more time with your family, you have to make a sacrifice.

If you want to work from home or anywhere in the world, you have to make a sacrifice.

And if you want to get all that materialistic nonsense that you think matters, that sacrifice must be made.

Make the sacrifice now and reap the rewards later and for as long as you want it to last.

But what sacrifice are we talking about here?

This sacrifice involves anything and everything that consumes this thing called time.

Those friends that are always wanting to suck down “a few”?

They gotta go.

Those people that always want to do things that aren’t productive?

They gotta go too.

And if you’re that person who likes to do those things, you have to stop.

Successful people eat, sleep, and breathe what they do, and you need to do the same.

If you can’t do that, then you might as well go back to work and tell your boss how awesome you think they are because your goals will remain unchecked.

Most of you will not do this, and that’s exactly why there is and will always be that 1%.

Now if you can understand how much of a sacrifice needs to be made, you can continue on with the rest of this post.

These other points are not that important but they will help.

Set Reminders

Setting goals is as good as writing out your shopping list.

You will set them and then forget what you wrote later.

Not to say that you are going to be forgetful, but life and the ten million things that come with it is going to happen.

That’s when this reminder will be needed.

I personally like using a whiteboard as it is one of the first things I see when I go into my office.

This reminds me every single day that something needs to be done.

Phones and apps don’t usually work for me, but maybe they can for you.

Exercise…Everything

dreading-exercise

When you think of exercise, only one thing comes to mind.

A lot of physical activity and sweat.

Okay, that was two things, but it all is associated with something that we dread.

Unless you’re some gym rat, then you can’t relate.

Now that exercise will help a lot, but not as much as the exercise that you can do with your brain.

Do some reading and studying what you are trying to do to get that success you are trying to get.

If you’re into affiliate marketing like I am, you might want to follow other bloggers and network with them if possible.

You will get more into your business, and you will replace those friends that are most likely bringing you down.

Oh, and go for a run and get some actual exercise in, as it will help with your energy level.

Big time.

Get a Mentor/Coach

I have never had one of these, but I have been one and am one.

Having someone to set the example and push you to do better is always good.

On top of that, you are getting advice from someone who has actually tasted success.

Don’t listen to all the working ants that always have the best ideas on what you should do with your life.

Go to college.

Become a _______ like me.

I’ve heard it all, and I’m sure you have too.

What these advice givers forget is that they are not successful.

Now you, as the smarter person, can understand such a thing because you read it here.

Take advice and listen to someone who has had success.

Someone who works whenever they want and doesn’t answer anyone.

Unless it’s their wife and kids like I do, of course.

And if a coach or mentor is not for you, mentoring books are a great way to point you in that right direction.

Be Accountable

blaming

No one ever likes to be told they’re wrong.

Everyone wants to be right, and that’s all they need to feel better about themselves.

For you, this soon-to-be entrepreneur, you need to forget about that kind of stuff.

Think about what you set out to do and be accountable for your actions or lack thereof.

If you know you did absolutely nothing this week, so be it.

Understand that it happened, and don’t make it happen again.

Don’t go blaming your kids, and don’t make any excuses.

YOU are in complete control of these goals you set, and there is always a way to make things happen.

If your kids bother you like mine, it’s time to adapt.

I work at coffee shops and wake up a couple of hours before they do.

This way, I can spend more time with them and be more productive.

Whether you get work done or not is all on you, so there shouldn’t be any finger pointing going on.

Stay Motivated

Starting a new business brings a lot of excitement and motivation.

Give it some time, and you will be back to dealing with life.

Then come to the excuses and that lack of motivation.

Take a look at those goals you set at least once a week and remember what it takes to get what you really want.

This is exactly what works for me, and I know that it will work for you as well.

If you can understand what I just mentioned in this post, you can very much set goals that can be accomplished.

Don’t become another statistic of failed goal setters and set some that you know you can accomplish.

Remember never to let anyone get in your way, and please don’t ever give up.

You got this!
