VIPKID: Scam or Legit Teaching Gig? [Review]

Welcome to my VIPKID review.

Is this a legit way to make money as a teacher online, or is VIPKID just another online scam trying to suck you dry?

There are many questions that come with sites like this, and I’m glad you have done your research.

Some of you might have run into some kind of ad, while some of you might have been introduced to this by someone else.

Whatever the case may be, I’m sure you didn’t get all the information you were looking for.

The great part about all this is that I will be giving you all the information you need so you can go about things with some confidence.

At least.

Let me just say that I am not a VIPKID teacher, and I don’t plan on becoming one either.

I do make my living on the internet through affiliate marketing, and I review various programs to help people like yourself.

However, I do know a few people who actually work for VIPKID.

The first person I met was at a coffee shop.

Being we were the only two people in that shop, and she was on her laptop, I assumed she was one of the few full-time bloggers out there.

That’s until I saw her get on what I thought was a Skype call.

Then I see her make some hand gestures as if she were talking to a kid.

I minded my business until I saw she was done doing whatever it was that she was doing.

VIPKID did come to mind, but I was like, what are the odds?

Lo and behold, she was a part of VIPKID and giving lessons at a coffee shop.

Well, here’s what was discussed.

What is VIPKID?

VIPKID is an online learning/teaching platform that connects teachers to students and vice versa.

These students come from China and range from 5 to 12 years old, with the occasional 2-3-year-old trying to jump on board.

Currently, most teachers are within the Continental US, but they will soon be expanding to other countries worldwide.

Or at least to US residents living in other countries.

The company was founded in 2013 by Cindi Mi and was launched in 2014.

Since then, they have evolved and grown into something a lot bigger and now have 60,000 teachers and 500,000 students.

If you can’t fathom that number, think about having just 1,000 kids in one room.

Now think about 500K…

Holy cow!

For people like yourself, though, this only means that there is a lot of space for more teachers.

Getting Started

To get started with VIPKID, you can sign up here.

There are no crazy requirements besides you needing a bachelor’s degree.

The good part about that, though, is the fact that your degree can be in anything and not just teaching.

Sometimes, they are really just looking for some credentials because this is more of a tutoring job rather than a formal setting type class.

Teachers might not be the best fit, and I have heard of teachers getting denied in the past.

You might also qualify if you’ve had some experience with early childhood, teaching, or even coaching.

You will need to provide the proper documents that will then have you setting up an appointment.

From there, you will be interviewed and thrown into a mock lesson.

The interviewer acts like a 5-year-old child, and you will give them a lesson that will last 10-15 minutes.

Once that is done, you will get told what you did well and what needs work.

You can then expect an email with your scores along with how much you will make.

This now leads to the more important things that I’m sure you are most curious about.

The Pay

Now, all this talk about what you need to do to get started, what you will be doing, and all that good stuff is really nothing if it’s not worth it.

With VIPKID, the pay is fair.

It’s not going to make you rich and will not replace your full-time income.

However, if done right, you can make a lot more money than most part-time jobs.

Initially, we all see the $22/hour deal.

That is, of course, really nice but kind of misleading.

For most new VIPKID teachers, your pay is going to look more like $9/hour.

Now, what brings things up are the bonuses.

Start and finish classes on time, and that’s an extra $1.

Have a student book you in 24 hours, you will make $2.

Teach 30+ classes a month, and that’s another $1.

So they might start you out with just $9, but with these bonuses taken into consideration, you can push past $19/hour or even the $22 that they mention.

Overall, I think the pay is not too shabby for the type of work you will be doing.

Not to mention the many other benefits of joining VIPKID.

Why Join VIPKID

Besides the obvious pay, there are other parts of this job that I find to be far more amazing.

For one, you are running a real deal business.

Sure, you might have hours and whatnot, but you are really your own boss.

You dictate who you work with, and you are in complete control of what gets done or doesn’t get done.

The next thing I absolutely love about VIPKID is the fact that you can work almost anywhere you want to.

Working from home is obvious, but you can be like that lady I met and taught at a coffee shop.

As long as you have an internet connection, you can work for VIPKID.

A slow connection is not recommended unless you feel like getting fired.

Now, the last thing that makes working for VIPKID worth it has to be the fact that you are helping others.

Making money and helping people are my things, and that is exactly why I love blogging.

Not many can say or feel the same, but I personally like helping others.

Okay, I changed my mind.

There is one other thing that I really like about VIPKID.

The classes are so short!

The pay might seem a bit low to some of you, but for less than an hour’s worth of work, you might just change your mind.

I mean, it takes me 30 minutes just to get started with my blogging business, and that’s not including any words.

Time will fly, and that short class will leave you with more time to do other things.

And hey, you might just be able to start a blog and make money there, too.

Just like VIPKID, that is just one other way that you can make a living from the internet.

But just like every good thing comes the bad.

I wouldn’t necessarily say bad, but maybe things you might not be a fan of.

The Downside to VIPKID

With every good thing comes the bad.

In the case of VIPKID, it’s not going to be something that will make or break your decision.

One thing that might not be the worst thing but not the best is the fact that you CAN NOT CANCEL any classes.

Once you book a lesson, there is no turning back.

Now you can cancel, but do it 6 times, and you can say bye-bye to VIPKID.

The only other thing that I thought was a con with VIPKID was the fact that not every class is guaranteed.

Just because you scheduled a class does not mean it’s payday for you.

They are allowed to cancel and will only pay you half.

You build your schedule around this one class just to have it canceled can absolutely suck and it is bound to happen.

Besides that, there is a lot more to love than dislike with VIPKID.

Final Verdict: Legit

legit

VIPKID is legit, and nothing close to a scam.

Some of you might have found things to be a bit sketchy, but rest assured that this is a legitimate company.

They have been around for a lot longer than most companies, and there are no signs of any slowing down either.

As a matter of fact, things are looking brighter for the company as there are more people joining as teachers and a whole lot more as students.

There is lots of work to go around, so do consider this if you are looking for a nice part-time gig.

Final Thoughts

The internet is a great place to make a living but sadly enough, there are way more scams than legit programs out there.

VIPKID might not be the best fit for you, and that’s okay.

For a more broad audience, I recommend something like Wealthy Affiliate.

If the idea of selling other people’s products sounds like something you might be interested in, that is what you want to try.

I have personally been a member of that company for over 5 years now and have been working from home thanks to that business model.

Besides that, I hope this VIPKID review has helped you understand everything a lot better.
